The Monastic Life
A certain brother went to Abba Moses in Scete,
and asked him for a good word,
and the elder said to him:
"Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything."

Here in this section, we will provide you with an brief introduction to a well known vocation - the call to the Monastic Life. The monastic life was started by laypeople seeking to escape the noise of the world and live an ascetic life devoted to prayer and contemplation. In time, laypeople also sought to live a holy life of prayer in action, either through service to the poor, education, or simply living a communal life where everyone's goods was shared in common and the community devoted to prayer. This call was shared equally by both men and women.
If you feel that you are called either to an active or contemplative way of life, we also provide links in this section where you can obtain further information on the monastic life. Links for women's monasteries are provided in the section "For Women - Links for Further Information". We pray that this information can help you discern whether or not you are being called to a most holy way of life!
